| I would like to welcome you to this simple on-line study aid in the academic study of religion or what I have been taught to call it 'comparative religion.'
For those who of you who don't know or would like to understand the difference between this field of inquiry and theology,
"Comparative religion is more than the comparing and contrasting of religious structures in different religions.
It is also a scientific, non-theological study of why individuals and groups of individuals are or are not religious and the impact that this has on a given society"
(Jensen, 2003, page 9).
This portion of my website is designed to give my students some additional avenues to understand what goes on in the mind of a 'believer' and what drives his or her religious culture or 'faith based community.' I maintain that this can be achieved by looking at what the 'believer' teaches about their beliefs and how they adhere to them. In addition, students are taught how to compare and contrast different religions. Take a moment and examine what a popular book has to say about being religious and religion. "'Professor Langdon,' called a young man with curly hair in the back row, 'if Masonry is not a secret society, not a corporation, and not a religion, then what is it?'
In this brief passage, from The Lost Symbol, Dan Brown challenges his readers to examine 'what it means to be Christian, what it means to be a religious believer, AND, most importantly, he points out that Christianity was not born in a vacuum, as may of the faithful maintain. In short, religions are not static, unchanging social/psychological institutions; religions are dynamic and in a constant state of flux. With this in mind, let us begin with a study of a 'dead' religion. At this time, I am not teaching any courses concerning comparative religion. In April of 2003, I successfully defended my master's thesis, Religion and Mother Right: Erich Fromm's Application of Johann Bachofen's Theory and, in 2004, I was accepted by Western Michigan University's sociology department as a doctoral candidate. If you would like a copy of my 126-page thesis, I can mail you a manuscript copy for the price of $35 dollars. Those interested in purchasing a copy of my thesis, just send me an email with the subject heading 'Thesis.' |
